so long, Con

The dog I’m holding in the picture on this site was named Con and I
learned last week that he died. He was still a puppy (at least in
his mind, I don’t know how big he was other than “gigantic,”) and it
was far too soon for him to go. He was my stepdad’s dog, who loved
him dearly, and I can’t imagine a dog could have spent better time on
earth, however brief.

books of unusual goodness

Here at pettyofficial we're on our third week without a space
launch. Hopefully events will pick up soon and I'll have more
updates to post. I've got my writing elves working overtime on the
third Clempog book.

Before dinner last night I picked up William Goldman's good parts
version of S. Morgenstern's "The Princess Bride" with the intention
of skimming through the introduction. Three hours later I passed out
from hunger, but otherwise would have doubtlessly finished the book
in a sitting. Anybody who hasn't read the book (and already owns
five or six copies of Clemency Pogue: Fairy Killer) should go out and
get Princess Bride toot sweet. Other than Morgenstern's failure to
recognize that "soup" is infinitely funnier than "stew," the thing is
flawless.

Soup!
